AI Tools Direct Dutch Users to Unlicensed Gambling Sites

A new Dutch study has found that popular AI chat and search assistants can direct users to online gambling sites that do not hold a Dutch licence.

Researchers at XY Legal Solutions tested ten AI tools between August and September 2026. These included ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Claude, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral Le Chat and Meta AI.

The tools received Dutch-language questions ranging from neutral casino searches to requests for casinos without Cruks, the self-exclusion register required for licensed operators.

All ten AI assistants named at least one operator without a Dutch online gambling licence in at least one conversation. Mistral Le Chat, Google AI Mode, DeepSeek and Grok provided unlicensed operator names after a single question.

Researchers recorded 79 test interactions. In 33 of them, at least one non-licensed operator was named.

The study also found cases where unlicensed sites were incorrectly described as legal or KSA-approved. Microsoft Copilot, Mistral Le Chat and Google Gemini presented unlicensed operators in ways that suggested they were licensed.

Microsoft Copilot generated a Top 50 legal casinos list containing unlicensed brands. It incorrectly suggested that all listed operators were KSA-licensed and connected to Cruks.

Some tools also highlighted benefits of illegal sites, including higher bonuses, faster payouts and no identity or Cruks checks.
