BGC Forecasts £1bn in Illegal Premier League Bets
Illegal bookmakers could take up to £800m in bets during the current Premier League season, according to the Betting and Gaming Council. The industry group expects this figure to rise by another £200m next season, bringing the annual total to around £1bn.
BGC analysis estimates that between £15m and £20m is placed with unlicensed operators during a typical Premier League matchweek. Around £20m was expected to be wagered through illegal platforms during the opening weekend alone.
BGC Chief Executive Grainne Hurst warned:
The criminal black market is looking to cash in too, taking millions of pounds on every round of matches.
The BGC says unlicensed operators pay no UK gambling tax and do not follow the player protection, financial security and safer gambling rules imposed on legal bookmakers.
The forecast comes before Remote Betting Duty rises from 15% to 25% on April 1, 2027. Bets on UK horse racing will remain taxed at 15%.
The Premier League has also started its first season without gambling brands on the front of team shirts. The voluntary restriction does not cover shirt sleeves or training kits.
